Garden composting is universally recommended as the sustainable alternative to the now restricted use of bonfires.  But how do you get rid of branches cut from trees and shrubs that will not rot down for years?  The best method is to run them through a shredder and then add that valuable organic waste to the compost heap.

Makita’s new UD2500 230v electric shredder is the answer for commercial garden maintenance operations and for use on larger domestic properties where tree pruning is a regular occurrence.    The 2,500w motor drives a horizontal rotating toothed cylinder that crushes the timber down against a fixed knife cutting blade.  This blade can be adjusted for position and removed for sharpening.  The cylinder will run up to 40 rpm which pulls the branches efficiently into the shredder without the operator applying any force.  The dual action of crushing and cutting enables this new Makita shredder to take branches up to 45mm in diameter while minimising the total volume of waste generated.  The waste timber is compacted into the 65 litre container with visible load gauge positioned at the base of the shredder.

The modern, slim design of the UD2500 shredder results in a very stable machine in operation.  With its low-slung container the machine becomes well-grounded and stabilised with the weight of waste held in the container.  Twin hand-grips on the top of the shredder give firm control and easy transportation on the large, rubber tread wheels.

The control panel provides a simple on-off switch that combines with ‘forward’ and ‘reverse’ control.  This also provides the overload protection as the automatic anti-block system cuts the motor when the loading on the cylinder reaches maximum capacity and before the stock is jammed on the blade.  By flicking the switch momentarily to ‘reverse’ the position of the material is shifted and then in ‘forward’ rotation, a second crush-and-cut will take the material through to the final shredding process.  This excellent shredder offers high performance at a very competitive price.
